Information on Changes to B.C. Disability Allowance
On September 1st, 2016, the $906 monthly living assistance cheque issued to B.C. residents with disabilities (PWD) will be increased by $77. This however comes with changes to the current Bus Pass system for those receiving PWD benefits.
For those who use or need a Bus Pass:
If an individual chooses to keep their bus pass, they will no longer have to pay an $45 yearly but will now be required to pay $52 monthly. Therefore, those with PWD benefits that use or need a bus pass will have a positive benefit of $345 compared to before.
[$77 (increase in PWD benefits) * 12 months] + $45 (elimination of the yearly bus pass fee) - [$52 (addition of the monthly bus pass fee) * 12 months] = $345]
[77刀（补助提高）＊12个月＋45刀（原残疾年票价格）］－［52刀（新残疾月票价格）＊12个月］ ＝ 345刀]
For those who do not need a Bus Pass:
If an individual chooses to opt out of the bus pass, he or she will not need to pay $52 a month. Therefore, those with PWD benefits that do not use public transit will have a positive benefit of $924 yearly compared to before.
[$77 (increase in PWD benefits) * 12 months] = $924]
How to use the new transportation allowance system:
Let’s make this step by step:
For those who currently have a bus pass and would still require a bus pass:
Continue using your previous bus pass; it will no longer have an expiry date.
For those who currently have a bus pass and would no longer need a bus pass:
Let the ministry know before the 5th of the month, and the payment will arrive in the following month.
For those who currently do not have a bus pass and require a bus pass:
Contact the ministry before the 5th of the relevant month.
For those who currently do not have a bus pass and do not require a bus pass:
$52* will be added to your monthly payment automatically.
*Those designated as Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) now receive a Transportation Support Allowance in addition to their regular monthly assistance. You can receive the Transportation Support Allowance (TSA) either as a bus pass or as $52 added to your monthly payment. If you wish to use the TSA as a bus pass, you do not have to do anything. The bus pass you hold already will not have an expiry date anymore, and it will be recharged every month. If you wish to use the TSA as a $52 addition to your monthly payment instead, you must let the ministry know before the 5th of the month (contact information is listed below), and the payment will arrive in the following month. You can change your decision about how to use the TSA at any time before the 5th of the month.
