For the past 3 years, Gloria Fung’s passion for disability empowerment has led her to achieve outstanding feats––the most memorable being the smiles on the faces of children of all abilities. She has worked tirelessly to ensure SDC programs run smoothly, overseeing the finances and fundraising. Gloria’s glowing enthusiasm to carry out SDC’s mission and bright personality makes her the Person of the Month for August.

Gloria was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada. She is currently a business and computer science major at the University of British Columbia. Gloria is deeply immersed in all things emotion-related. From filling out personality tests to analyzing films and books, she values happiness and empathy, which are integral parts of who she is. Above all, Gloria loves to make people smile––her end-goal in every sdc-related work, and broader life, is to induce joy and happiness. She believes a smile is one of the most gratifying rewards.

Gloria’s first days in SDC go back to 2017 when she was only 15. She was intrigued by the hiring posts that her older peers at school were buzzing about so she decided to fill out an application. To her surprise, she was given the position of Marketing Associate to the Communications Coordinator on the Youth Team. Soon, Gloria transitioned onto the SDC Committee as a Senior Fundraising Campaign Organizer.

Her fondest memories at SDC include fundraising with Krispy Kreme doughnuts, planning coffeehouses, and organizing the 2020 Once-Upon-A-Shine Gala. Although she was quite exhausted from the demanding workload, Gloria persevered through every obstacle, creating meaningful change and forming lasting friendships.

Moreover, Gloria has truly been a crucial part of SDC. In every initiative she has been a part of, she has always been willing to go the extra mile to ensure success––even at the expense of her sleep. She strives to create a better society for children through providing endless support and creating new opportunities for them. In fact, Gloria has expanded SDC by raising thousands of dollars to contribute to building a safer environment for children of all abilities.

When she reflects on her time at SDC, Gloria is grateful for the “multitude of contrasting emotions and nuances” it has given her. SDC has not only helped build her character and develop a diverse skill-set, but it has also provided her with unforgettable memories with her colleagues––her second family. We are immensely proud of Gloria and her contributions to SDC and cannot wait to see what she’ll accomplish in the future.
