“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Person of the Month Award is specially designed to recognize the dedicated and diligent individuals who have greatly contributed and made positive impacts to the Social Diversity for Children Foundation. For the month of November, we are proud to acknowledge a member of the SDC Youth Team, Alex Lee! From becoming a Finance Associate, to a Chief Finance Officer, to his current position as the Chief of Staff, Alex has worked hard and taken great pride in his contributions to this organization, as well as the people he has influenced along the journey.

Alex was born and raised in South Korea, then immigrated with his parents to Langley when he was in Grade 2. He is currently in his senior year at R.E. Mountain Secondary School, and is an IB Diploma Student. Some of his hobbies include playing sports or engaging in outdoor activities with his friends and watching movies/shows. One of Alex’s goals for the future is to attend university for a degree in philosophy. Although his plans are still vague and undetermined, he values flexibility and believes it would be wise to take whatever life is willing to give him. As of now, he feels that law may be the best option for him as a future career.

At first, Alex joined as a member of the youth team at SDC where he has been with for two years. He joined the team through an interim hiring process in January of 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alex's dedication and passion for SDC's mission have made him a valuable member of the team. He has previously had the roles of Finance Associate, Chief Finance Officer, and Chief of Staff. Since then, he feels like he has made the most impact and more significant contributions as the Chief of Staff. In this role, he had to carry more responsibilities which allowed him to persevere and make a greater impact to his local communities. His dedication and hard work resulted in many valuable contributions to SDC and has made a positive influence on the people around him along with others he has encountered on the journey. After the pandemic restrictions were laid off, Alex took the initiative to volunteer in many fundraisers, coordinate the first return of in-person meetings, and participate in SDC’s annual galas in hopes to help promote our cause.

Alex is currently serving as Chief of Staff on the youth team’s Headquarters team. He joined SDC during the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore was unable to get the full experience of SDC’s initiatives until the 2021 SDC annual gala. Since then, he has been actively participating in activities such as our Krispy Kreme fundraisers and volunteering in our various programs. Alex’s favourite part of SDC is the community that the youth team has become. He views the youth team as a second family and will always cherish the memories made during meetings, fundraisers and other planned group activities. Alex has been an excellent addition to the youth team through his passion for SDC’s mission and the effort he has put into making our world more diverse.

Throughout the countless years Alex has dedicated towards SDC, he has always been engaged in many initiatives, events, and projects towards disability justice that often goes unnoticed in our world. “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” by Martin Luther King Jr, is a strong quote that Alex connects to as it accurately describes our society today. With the continuous development of technology, the world is now more connected than before, yet discrimination and segregation is still a prevalent issue that is far from being solved. As this quote truly emphasizes that differences can be considered as a strength, Alex wishes to create an inclusive society in the future that acknowledges every individual's unique abilities and celebrates diversity. Thank you Alex for your hard work and determination towards SDC!
