“The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over… every day.” - David Foster Wallace
Sydney was born and raised in New Westminster, BC and is currently in their senior year of high school at Richmond Christian Secondary School. Their hobbies include skateboarding, spending countless hours creating digital animations, and playing the drums with her band. Art has always been a prominent factor in Sydney’s life and she’s both consumed and create countless different forms of it - from poetry, mixed media, film, and music. Their plans are still vague as of now - Sydney has interest in becoming a filmmaker and/or becoming an educator as a potential career path in her future. Despite what career path Sydney chooses, she wants to do their genuine best in creating a positive impact in the community around her.
Sydney joined the SDC Youth Team in the Summer of 2022 and worked diligently as her role of a Marketing Associate during the Youth Team recruiting season. Jumping into the SDC team, Sydney worked tirelessly to bring out SDC’s mission. One of Sydney’s earliest memories at SDC is the Vancouver Bubble Tea Festival where she helped administer the carnival games and spread SDC’s mission to those in the lower mainland community. She loved working along the SDC team to collaborate on a project that resulting in beautiful end products. Another one of a prominent and ongoing event that SDC hosts are the Krispy Kreme fundraisers. Sydney continuously never fails to show her leadership skills in managing and conducting the logistical parts of the Krispy Kreme sales. Taking leadership in these fundraiser projects, Sydney uses the best of their abilities to ensure that these projects run smoothly and efficiently. Another one of Sydney’s prime memories at SDC is the annual Once Upon a Shine Gala, which Sydney believed gave SDC’s children a time to showcase their talent and celebrate SDC’s team’s accomplishments - a truly wonderful night that Sydney was delighted to take part of.
Through their hard work, Sydney proves that anyone can create positive and strong contributions to people beyond their neighbouring communities. “The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over… every day” is a quote by David Foster Wallace that Sydney holds close, not only because she adores Wallace’s literary works, but because it holds merit. The value of community connectedness can strengthened by creating a society that celebrates diversity - which is ultimately what Sydney works to achieve everyday.
