"The more you know, the more you realise you don't know" - Albert Einstein
The Person of the Month Award is specially designed to recognize the dedicated and diligent individuals who have greatly contributed and made positive impacts to the Social Diversity for Children Foundation. For the month of November, we are proud to acknowledge a member of the SDC Youth Team, Angela Kang. From the start of her journey as Executive Assistant to her current position as Chief Executive Officer, she has shown her undivided devotion towards exemplifying the SDC mission and values through her hard work. Angela has not only made contributions within the SDC community, but she has also expressed her passion and dedication by putting in the effort to familiarize the topic of disability justice across her school, inspiring over 15 connections to support SDC’s mission.
From her birthplace in South Korea, Angela immigrated to Canada and is currently a senior attending the IB program at R.E. Mountain Secondary School. She loves anything revolving around music, is more than open to trying new things, and she strives to one day pursue her dreams. Angela currently works on the American Sign Language workshop, embracing the idea of open mindedness, communication, and learning. She believes that the genuine interest in one another is stemmed from the ability to communicate, and only then can we truly understand each individual as a person and not as how society perceives them.
Angela’s SDC journey started in 2020 after hearing her school members talk about the gala. Angela has previously been positioned from Executive Assistant to Chief of Staff and from Chief of Staff to CEO. She has gained valuable advice from Anson, Cynthia, and Alice, who were in previous leadership roles in the SDC Youth Team. When Angela first joined SDC, she was timid and shy in meetings. She began working with programs like Squarespace and projects like Mr. Gold’s Gelato fundraiser. As CEO, Angela went through multiple hiring seasons, leading the first in-person youth team meeting and getting more involved with components of SDC such as the Once Upon a Shine gala.
Angela has been an incredible CEO for the youth team. She has shown incredible leadership through her organization of fundraisers, organizing webinars, involvement at the SDC gala and running youth team meetings. She has helped with many initiatives throughout her time in SDC. Her current project is an American Sign Language (ASL) workshop for elementary schools called Operation: Sign and Shine. Even with initiatives that have been cancelled due to COVID-19, Angela has kept planning and preparing our youth team for amazing opportunities such as our recent Krispy Kreme Fundraisers.
Throughout the many years of being a part of the Youth Team in SDC, Angela has successfully brought awareness to the topic of disability justice to local communities. She has obtained countless connections during her journey to support our mission in hopes to bring everyone together in order to make disability justice not a far fetched dream, but a reality supported by each individual. Angela wishes to utilize her abilities in order for this idea to be introduced in education systems to prevent the social stereotypes being created as well to empower the upcoming generations to continue this allyship. "The more you know, the more you realise you don't know" is a quote that is extremely powerful to Angela as it connects to the important concept of open-mindedness. The idea of accepting that only having knowledge on disability justice is imperfect truly allows every individual to continue with the mindset that learning will never stop. Angela believes that we should take on the listener's role to truly show a genuine understanding of becoming an advocate, and will continue to dedicate more efforts into creating an environment where people of all abilities will be included. Thank you Angela for your hard work and dedication to SDC!
