2024 Spring Programs

In the 2024 Spring semester, SDC will be offering a total of 6 programs for children in the community! SDC believes that social interaction for children is needed more than ever, and we hope that we could bring that in a safe manner to all of our participants through our programs!

Building Bridges with Music

Singing, dancing, and having fun together, Building Bridges with Music is a great opportunity for children with exceptionalities to bond through melodies and music. Here, children with exceptionalities can learn music and bond with others in a safe environment with help of a marvellous music teacher! This program will provide a safe environment for children to participate in interactive activities and build strong relationships during these unprecedented times! We will be offering online for this program in the Spring 2024 semester.

At SDC’s Building Bridges with Music program, the children will participate in the following activities:

  • Music & Drama

  • Playing Instruments

  • Singing

  • Dancing

  • Social Activities

  • And more!

Education Through Creativity

Creating art is a wonderful way to develop social and creative skills. Through the Education Through Creativity program, children with exceptionalities can express themselves through drawing, painting, and creating new masterpieces while being led by an amazing experienced art teacher that will facilitate fun interactive activities! Children will be able to build lasting friendships, learn more about expression, and partake in fun interactive activities while enjoying the beauty of art! We will be offering online for this program in the Spring 2024 semester.

At SDC’s Education Through Creativity program, the children will participate in the following activities:

  • Arts & Crafts

  • Drawing

  • Painting

  • Learning About Famous Artists

  • Social Activities

  • And more!

 

Drama for Diversity (DFD)

Stories are a great way for children to bond with others and learn. The Drama for Diversity (DFD) program, taught by a distinguished drama teacher allows children with exceptionalities to express themselves through acting and storytelling. This program teaches children about famous plays and encourages creativity and imagination through acting in a safe and entertaining way. Children will participate in active games and icebreakers that will help build confidence, expression, and imagination!

Spaces are very limited for this program so register now to secure a spot in this new, exciting program!

At SDC’s Drama for Diversity (DFD) program, the children will be able to gain:

  • More knowledge about story telling and famous plays

  • Experience with presenting in front of others in a safe environment

  • Safe social interaction during these unprecedented times

  • Opportunities to be creative and improve on their imagination skills

  • And more!

MPM/JELIC

The only thing that’s true of all students is that no two children learn the same way or at the same pace. The MPM/JELIC program is a great in-person math program that can help children with special needs develop math skills at their own pace with the help of an experienced math teacher. The program will run in small group classes with a 1:1 ratio between the students and staff, ensuring that all the participants will get enough support they need!

All the participants will be asked to take a short skills assessment prior to the program start date, and the teachers will use that information to create lesson plans that are personalized towards each child!

At SDC’s MPM/JELIC program, the children will be able to gain:

  • More knowledge of fundamental mathematics concepts

  • Safe social interactions with other participants and SDC staff

  • Personalized lesson plans

  • A chance to work closely with experienced teachers

  • And more!

 

K-Pop Dance

The K-Pop Dance program is one of SDC’s newest programs, where children with special needs will be taught K-Pop dance routines by an experienced dance teacher! Participants will learn different K-Pop dance routines, along with doing fun and active warm-ups and cool-downs with other participants and the instructor! This program will be held in two locations, with one being at the Dunbar Community Centre, and the other being at the Britannia Community Centre.

Spaces are filling up quick for this new, exciting program, so register as soon as you can to secure a spot!

At SDC’s K-Pop Dance program, the children will be able to gain:

  • Dance skills fostered through learning K-Pop dances

  • Safe social interactions with other participants and SDC staff

  • Fun physical activity during warm-up and cool-down

  • Getting a chance to master a full K-Pop dance routine

  • And more!

Education Through Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality is becoming ever so popular, and the Education Through Virtual Reality (ETVR) program is the perfect way for children with special needs to immerse themselves in this new media! This in-person VR program guides children through educational and recreational Virtual Reality (VR) applications in an entirely new and unique experience to learn social, life, and job skills. This program will run in a small group with a 1:1 ratio between the participants and SDC staff.

At SDC’s Education Through Virtual Reality (ETVR) program, the children will be able to gain:

  • Useful social, life, and job skills using the VR Technology

  • Safe social interaction with other participants and SDC staff

  • Experience using the VR Technology, along with many VR applications that are available

  • And more!
